Well Autumn is here and many of us start to crave a change in our hair as the weather turns. Colour can give us a subtle change to enhance our skin tone or a completely new look depending on how you feel.

Lets talk Highlights versus Colour and Lights - our two best selling colour services.

Highlights

What are they?

      Either Woven (for a natural blended effect) or Sliced (for a more bold defined colour) through the hair, highlights colour 50 - 80% of your hair, leaving the rest your natural colour.

What are the benefits? 

• Several colours can be used to create what we call "Multi-tonal hair" (Lots of colour!)
• Because some of your natural hair is left uncoloured, your regrowth is more blended so you need it recoloured less often.
• We can tailor the amount of highlights we apply to the individual- from blended scattered lights (parting highlights) for a natural effect - to lots of lights (full woven highlights) for maximum coverage.
• No colour is applied to your skin as all product is applied to your hair and wrapped in foil.
• You retain your natural colour at the root of your hair- fans of highlights often say this keeps their colour feeling more natural.
• Highlights can ENHANCE your natural colour rather than completely change it- particularly effective at blending in the first signs of grey and creating a sun kissed effect on your hair.

Colour & Lights

What are they?

As with highlights some of your hair is woven or sliced in foil to create ribbons of colour- often lightest creamy blonde. However on the rest of your hair a contrasting Blonde is applied all over directly onto your hair and scalp- therefore colouring 100% of your hair.

What are the benefits? 

• As 100% of your hair is coloured, when your hair is done you have no "roots" showing- fans of colour & lights often say they love getting rid of their roots as it makes their hair feel fresher and brighter.
• Combining Colour with Lights gives you a multi-tonal colour but with the benefit of covering all of your natural grey (if you have any!) and dark roots.
• Its a quick service compared to Highlights (approx 30 mins compared to 1 hour to apply the colour) 
• Combining similar blonde tones will give to a more natural colour- choosing contrasting Colours will give you a more dramatic effect.

How do i decide??? 

This all depends on the effect you are after- for a more natural blonde to enhance your own colour or to keep a little of your natural colour along with your blonde then Highlights are for you.

If however you dislike your roots and are after total coverage but want to have the multi-tonal effect of highlights then Colour & Lights would be perfect for you.

Our Apprentice team are winners!!!!

We are thrilled to tell you that our Apprentice team won first and second prizes at our training school EASI HAIR Academy's annual competition!! The photographic competition was judged by a prestigious team of judges and took place at Easi academy's headquarters in Colchester. The first category was a pre-Raphaelite theme, the second years did Andy Warhol and the third year were asked to created Picasso cubism style hair. Here are our winners…

Graduate Stylist

19 Year old Chelsea has been part of the SDB team for 3 years.We caught up with her one VERY busy Friday…

Q. Chelsea what do you love about your work? 

A. EVERYTHING!! I always wanted to work at SDB and it has been everything I hoped it would be. I love learning so much on a day to day basis and two days are never the same.

Q. What is your favourite aspect?

A. I adore long hair work - especially Prom hair and Bridal.We take part in the Heart FM wedding show twice a year where we meet new brides to be and demonstrate our work. We do the hair for the main bridal fashion show too which I love doing.

Q. Do you do all types of hairdressing?

A. Yes I am trained in Level 2 NVQ hairdressing which covers most aspects of hair- I am currently training in my level 3 which is more advanced. I am trained in Hair Extensions too which is one of my main job roles.

Q. Do you wear extensions yourself?

A. I couldn't imagine life without them!! No seriously- they give my hair so much body and length. I wear the Balmain Double hair - my hair has grown so much whilst wearing them that soon I will only need them for the body.

Q. What are you aims for the future?

A. I would like to become a senior Stylist at SDB and particularly specialise in Bridal hair and Extensions- I feel I really make a difference to people when I give them the hair they have always dreamed of- whether its for their wedding day or to give them confidence everyday.

Meet Fran

 Graduate Stylist

19 Year old Fran has been a member of the SDB team since the beginning of 2015. She says her favourite thing about hairdressing is making her clients feel relaxed and love their hair.

 

 Fran is currently in her advanced training in cutting, colour and smoothing treatments and loving every minute! " I want to learn as much as i can and push myself to become the best hairdresser i can be." Says Fran

Meet TARA...

Tara is 19 years old with a HUGE passion for hair, Make up and vintage style. Tara is our Head assistant, who looks after 4 assistants and 6 Saturday team members. Here she tells us about her work…

                                                                               Q. How did you get into hairdressing? 
I always have wanted to become a hairdresser. I got a job at a salon after I left school but had my haircut at Silhouette du Barry- it was always my dream salon to work in ! I applied to work there and after 2 attempts I got to my second interview and they offered me a job!

Q. What do like about your job?
Everything! It's such a busy buzzy salon with high standards. I love the challenges every day brings and the training is so good.

 Q. Do you look after clients everyday? 
Yes as a second year apprentice I look after clients a lot- everything from colours to extensions to blow-drys. From this year I am on the long hair and Bridal team so will be working with my Senior Stylists on Weddings and looking after girls for their Prom hair in the summer. I feel I am at my best making clients feel relaxed and looked after.


Q. How do you see your future?
I would love to train young hairdressers and work as a senior stylist at the salon. My passion is Hair Extensions and Creative Colouring so I would really love to enter British colour technician of the year one day. My Boss Nathan has been nominated for a Eastern hairdresser of the year 4 times!

Q. What are your ambitions?
To work in Fashion shows in New York, Milan and Paris like my Bosses do. I would love to work more with hair extensions, wigs and hairpieces as I have a real passion for that kind of hairdressing. I really think the most exciting thing about hairdressing is that it is so diverse and you can branch out into different areas and travel the world!

Our 2014 Apprentice Team,

 the story so far…

Meet Bronte, Emmy and Evie; our Apprentice team for this year. They began their journey this September to become hair stylists at SDB, we caught up with them to ask how they are getting on…

How are you finding work compared to school?
Emmy: I love it! the hours are obviously longer but every day is different where as school was always regimented and the same every day. I love seeing different clients and doing different tasks each day- I am learning so much!

How long is your apprenticeship and what does it involve?
Evie: Our Apprenticeship is up to 2 years- we are studying for our NVQ level 2. We can qualify earlier if we work hard which means we will work on the salon floor as Graduate stylists sooner. After our NVQ level 2 we will study for our NVQ level 3 while we are Graduate Stylists which is the advanced training in Hairdressing. We have Tuesdays dedicated to Training, which is with the hair Academy EASI who come to the salon to teach our Theory and Practical sessions, we also have extra training in practical skills with our Directors Zoe and Nathan which i really enjoy.

Why did you choose an Apprenticeship rather than hairdressing college?
Bronte: An apprenticeship i feel is much more hands on- we are looking after clients all day which is great for our practical skills and also our customer service skills. At the salon we are working with top hairdressers every day and learning from them, some of our Stylists are assisting on the X Factor for Celebrity Hairdresser Jamie Stevens at the moment and they teach us! I feel inspired by them and hope to follow in their footsteps one day.

What do you like most about your Apprenticeship?
Evie: I love that we get to help the hairstylists with Colours and hair extensions a lot. I also love blowdrying clients hair and I really enjoy styling long hair in up-styles and look forward to working on Weddings and Prom hair next year. 

Where do you hope to be in the future after your Apprenticeship?
Emmy: I would love to become a top Stylist at the salon like our Art Director Lena and work with Nathan and Zoe on Fashion week shows and TV shows like X Factor for Jamie Stevens- he is amazing!
Bronte: I will keep training and taking part in courses as in hairdressing you never stop learning. My dad is a hairdresser and i would love to make him proud by being a brilliant and successful stylist.
Evie: I really want to become a Bridal hair specialist and become an Art Director in the salon, I love working at Silhouette du Barry- I really feel i have the best start to my hairdressing career!

Our Face of the Future Judge Emily's Story...

Emily's Story

We met Emily when she was just 16, she had popped into the salon to inquire about our hair extensions. We spotted her potential straight away and asked her if she would be interested in some hair modelling for the salon. Her first shoot with us was a great success! She was a natural model- and here is her very first image with us…

Emily has since gone on to Model for many Hair Competitions and shows around the UK such as the L'Oreal Colour Trophy and British Hairdressing awards. She has built up a portfolio of images working for Designers, stylists, Clothing brands and Top photographers. But one of the highlights of her Career so far has to be making the final 6 in Sky Living TV's Britain and Irelands Next Top model. With her versatility, hard working attitude and sunny personality it is easy to see why she was so popular with all the judges.

Youthful Looking Appearance

Tired of the same hair? Want something new that works for your age?

Here are some of our top tips from the salon’s senior Stylists…

•   Firstly, regular cuts are a must! We all lose hair as we get older so to keep it looking its thickest and keep that youthful shape by having a good cut every 6 weeks. 

•   Lighten your hair colour. Dark hair makes the complexion look shallow and pale. By lifting the colour one shade at a time, or by adding highlights around the face, adds tone and lifts your face. A lighter colour is also great to disguise white hair’s coming through.

•   Remember, you don’t have to go short! But, if you like your hair long, use layers to lift and frame your face. This gives you a “Facelift” by drawing your features upwards. Through clever cutting and styling of your hair your stylist really can make you look younger. Subtle flicks, kicks and pushing hair off of the face will ‘lift’ the appearance of your features. No wonder all the celebs do it!

 Face of the Future 2014

Fran's Story,

  We Met Fran back in 2009 when she was modelling in a local Fashion show at restaurant in Chelmsford. We and our Photographer Martin Higgs spotted her potential immediately- the camera just loved her! We asked her to take part in an in salon photo shoot and her images were stunning, she built up work quickly and contacted modelling agencies to get even more work- all while she              was still studying her Art Course!

She often worked for nothing to gain experience and build a portfolio of images to get future work. Five years on, her hard work and dedication has paid off and Fran has worked for Choice Clothing, numerous clothes and jewellery designers and Make -up artists. She has travelled abroad modelling for Vidal Sassoon and she has featured in no less than three of our British Hairdressing awards collections- all reaching the Finals of the most prestigious awards in Hairdressing. Fran is a joy to work with and we are so proud and happy of her success- and this is only the beginning!

The journey of a Graduate Stylist. Meet Keely!

17 Year old Keely is our new Graduate stylist. Starting her training straight from school she has almost Qualified in her NVQ level 2 Hairdressing after just 13 months! (It takes most young stylists 2 years). She explains how she is one of our quickest learners and why she chose hairdressing as a career...

 What inspired you to become a hairdresser? 
I Moved to Essex when I was still at school and I loved going to the hairdressers. I was fascinated by everything they did from shampooing to cutting...

 Why did you want to work at SDB? 
I had heard that Silhouette du Barry was a fantastic salon with really good training. Nathan and Zoe are passionate hairdressers who are involved in all the Fashion weeks each season and work on TV for Jamie Stevens on X Factor and with Gok Wan, which I would love to do one day. I get loads of opportunities here like watching hair shows, assisting Nathan, Zoe and the team backstage at shows and competitions, colour and cutting courses and I have worked styling hair for professional models at shows myself already.

Why did you apply for an apprenticeship rather than go on to Full time Hairdressing College? 
I did 2 years of part time Hairdressing college through my school for the VRQ Qualification and i just couldn't wait to get into the real world working with real Clients and earn my own money! It was the best decision I  ever made as i have had so much experience both in and out of the salon that i would never have got at college. I have worked on shows and at lots of Weddings and assisted Zoe and Nathan loads which has taught me so much. I can't wait for the next Chapter as a Graduate Stylist!!!

How did you Qualify so quickly?   
The beauty of studying for your NVQ through the salon is it is at your own speed. You get 2 years funding at a private college. SDB use EASI hairdressing Academy but if you work hard you can do it quicker. Our Easi Assessor Emma comes to the salon every week to teach us Theory and Practical, plus we get extra practical training from Zoe who is a Qualified Assessor so she can Assess us and "pass us off" on work we do in the salon everyday. I was so determined to get the first part of my NVQ finished (level 2). I have made sure I get lots of models in and stayed for extra training after work whenever I get the chance to. I work with some amazing stylists - lots who have trained from day one at the salon like me, and I watch them and work with them as much as I can. It's been hard work but it's paid off! I am now looking after clients in the salon everyday - cutting, colour, perming, well everything! All my work gets checked by Zoe or Nathan. The next step is my NVQ level 3 which is the advanced qualification focusing on my hairdressing skills more in depth. I hope to that within 9 Months!

What is your favourite part of your job?   
 I love styling long hair up, especially for weddings. I assist the wedding team both on location weddings and in the salon. I look after lots of bridesmaids and help the senior stylist with the bride sometimes! The team here are so lovely and the senior stylists really help me with my hairdressing. When I become a senior stylist I would love to be part of the wedding team and specialise in that. 

I love the fact that you are always learning here. We have regular training for the senior stylists who have one to one training with Nathan and Zoe and also 'inspiration nights' for the whole team where we are taught 'up and coming trends and techniques' that Nathan and Zoe learn at Fashion weeks. But most of all, day to day making clients happy with a new look is so rewarding and makes the hard work worth it. I can't imagine doing anything else!

What would you say to a School leaver interested in Hairdressing?    

Get a Saturday job at a salon to learn basics as soon as you can. When you are leaving school research the best salons in your area for training. I travel from Maldon to Chelmsford everyday but I love working at Silhouette du Barry and the training is worth the journey!  Easi Hair Academy have a great website and they can help you find a good salon. My advice would be start early as if you work hard you can be a Stylist by the time you are 18 years old.

Holiday Hair - Top Tips...

Your Holiday Hair Top Tips...

• Treat your hair like your skin in the sun- Protect and Moisturise... SPF spray on your hair (and parting if you have one) to PROTECT and an after-sun moisture balm treatment to MOISTURISE your hair after you have washed it.

• When you venture into the sea or pool then top tip- soak your hair with clean water before you get in- it will absorb far less damaging salt or chlorine.

• A great trick for a day at the beach or by the pool is to wash your hair in the morning and apply your moisture balm treatment to towel dried hair- slick long hair into a pony tail then twist into a tight bun to keep the fragile ends covered up. For shorter hair slick back off your face with a comb- The balm will dry like a gel keeping your hair in place and protected.

• Even with SPF protection expect your hair colour to lighten slightly in the sunshine- prevent this further by wearing a hat for total block.

• Let your colourist know if your hair has been exposed to lots of sun- it can affect your next colour service and salon pre-colour treatments will prevent this.

• Get a beach look in the evenings by using a texturising spray-we love prive finishing texture spray - a gentle texturizer spray that won't dry out your hair like some harsh salt sprays. Simply spray into damp hair, encourage movement and curl by "scrunching" in your hands and diffuse dry with a diffuser attachment or let air dry.

• Leave your hairdryer at home and pack super light bendies or velcro rollers-apply to 80% dry hair, roll up your locks and leave to set for as long as you can before you go out.

Meet the team: Jonny's story

An interview with Jonny Sheppard, the newest member of our Senior Styling Team. Jonny came to hairdressing after another career and it's refreshing to see people with a love of the job discovering it's not just for school leavers and girls!

How old are you? 

26

How did you get into hairdressing?

I actually started off in Mechanical engineering! I always wanted to be a hairdresser. I grew up watching my mum as a hairdresser and was really interested but at the same time I was a bit of a lad and was too embarrassed to admit that's what I wanted to do to my mates. I worked for BMW and studied mechanical engineering. I moved to the Channel Islands for work but they only issue you a 3 year 'right to work' and so when it ran out I decided to try and do what I'd always wanted...hairdressing.

Where did you start? 

Luckily my mum gave me some contacts from her hairdressing days and I came to do some voluntary work for Silhouette du Barry, in Chelmsford. After two weeks, they offered me an apprenticeship. 

How was the training?

Different to engineering! I gained my Level 2 NVQ in hairdressing after 18 months and have now almost finished my Level 3. I've now just been promoted to Senior Stylist at Silhouette du Barry.

What's the coolest part of your job now?

Zoe and Nathan put me forward to work at London Fashion Week and I worked on Astrid Anderson's Men's SS/13 show. It was thrilling and satisfying all at the same time. I've also been sent abroad a couple of times for Matrix conferences which has been pretty cool too. To be honest though, making people feel great everyday in the Salon is ultimately the bit I love the most. 

What are you looking forward to in the future?

I'd love to be like Zoe and Nathan, working in the Salon with clients and working simultaneously on Fashion weeks and TV programmes, styling at the same time.
